How Do Steel Rolling Mill Machine Roll Wire Rods, Strip, and Section Steel?

Wire rods, strip steel, and section steel are more and more widely applied to many industries. However, do you know how they are produced? In this article, we will give you a detailed introduction to how the steel rolling mill machine rolls wire rods, strip steel, and section steel.

What Is a Steel Rolling Mill Machine?

A steel rolling mill is a mechanical equipment that realizes the metal rolling process. It generally refers to the equipment that completes the entire process of rolled product production, including main equipment, auxiliary equipment, lifting and transportation equipment, and auxiliary equipment. But generally speaking, the rolling mill often refers only to the main equipment.

The working principle of the rolling mill is based on the theory of metal plastic deformation. The friction between the roll and the rolled piece is used to compress the rolled piece so that its shape and size meet the requirements. According to different rolling requirements, rolling mills can be divided into many types, such as two-roll mills, three-roll mills, multi-roll mills, etc.

During the rolling process, various components of the rolling mill are subject to varying degrees of force and torque and therefore require precise control and adjustment. At the same time, to ensure the stability of the rolling process and product quality, the status of the rolling mill needs to be monitored and adjusted in real time.

Common rolling mill status monitoring includes status monitoring of rolling mill force and energy parameters, rolling process status monitoring, and rolling mill equipment status monitoring. These monitoring contents can effectively reflect the operating status and fault conditions of the rolling mill, providing a basis for timely adjustment and maintenance.

Rolling Process of Wire Rod, Strip Steel, and Section Steel

The rolling process of wire rods, strips, and profiles is essentially a process of metal plastic deformation, but they are different in rolling processes, equipment, and production applications.

Wire Rod Rolling

The wire rod is steel with a diameter between 5 and 10 mm. The rolling process generally uses continuous casting billets as raw materials. After being heated in a heating furnace, it enters the rough, medium, and finishing rolling units for multi-pass rolling. Finally, it is rolled and formed by a reducing forming machine, and then coiled and formed by a coiling machine. After being transported by a cooling conveyor belt, it is sent to the finishing area for finishing. Those parts that need to be reprocessed will undergo processes such as pickling, coating, wire drawing, and annealing.

Strip Steel Rolling

The rolling process of a strip is similar to that of a wire rod. It also uses multiple passes of rolling to form strips of the required shape and size. Among them, hot rolling is to heat the slab evenly to the appropriate temperature in an electric furnace, and then perform rough rolling, intermediate rolling, and finish rolling; cold rolling is to cool the steel strip at room temperature after hot rolling, and then cold rolling. Annealing is a heat treatment process in which the metal is heated above its recrystallization temperature to make it more ductile and tough, held for a certain period, and then cooled to below its recrystallization temperature with water or oil. Finally, packaging is carried out according to different products.

Section Steel Rolling

The rolling process of section steel is relatively complex. It is formed by rolling the steel billet through multiple passes such as pre-rolling, rough rolling, intermediate rolling, and finishing rolling to form profiles of various specifications and cross-sectional shapes. During the rolling process, the steel billet undergoes multiple compression and tensile deformations. Under extreme conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, and high speed, through metal plastic deformation, the arrangement of steel particles is changed, causing changes in physical properties and chemical composition, and finally forming products that meet standard specifications.

At Last

The steel rolling mill machine is one of the very important equipment in modern steel enterprises. Its operating status and quality directly affect the enterprise's production efficiency and product quality. The rolling process of wire rods, strip steel, and section steel is similar, but the specific operation details and requirements are different.
