About the type of rolling mill and the number of rolls

Luoyang Judian is a manufacturer specializing in the production of metal rolling mills. Today we will introduce to you the common types of rolling mills.

Two-High Mills - These are the most commonly used mills.

These mills have two horizontally mounted rolls. The mill motor drives either two rolls (top and bottom) or just one roll (usually the bottom roll, which rotates due to friction between the roll and the workpiece). Depending on the direction of roll rotation, the mill can be either an irreversible (unidirectional) mill or a reversing mill.

Three-high mills - These types of mills have three horizontally mounted rolls.

The rolls in these mills rotate permanently in one direction. These mills can be rolled by increasing the number of slots compared to two-high mill stands.

The rolling stock is rolled in one direction between the lower and middle rolls and in the opposite direction between the middle and upper rolls. The stationary intermediate rollers are directly driven.

The lower and upper rolls are driven by gear boxes, which are usually adjustable. These mills are used to roll shaped rolled products in grooved rolls.

Multi-roll mills - These mills consist of six, seven, twelve or twenty horizontally mounted rolls. In all these mills, only two rolls are work rolls and all other rolls are backup rolls.

Usually the work rolls are driven and the backup rolls are friction driven. Multi-roll mills are used to roll very thin sheets, strips and foils.

Universal Mills - These mills have two horizontally mounted rolls and two vertically mounted rolls that are driven by bevel gear drives.

Vertical rolls work by edging the sides of the rolling stock, creating its transverse "walls", precise angles and sharp edges. Edger rolls used to be installed from the front of the mill stand, rarely from the rear, but sometimes from both sides of the mill.

Universal mills are used for rolling slabs, universal plates and sections. In order to be able to roll broadside beams, the vertical rolls are installed in the same plane and the roll shafts are placed horizontally. Only the horizontal rollers are driven.

Knowing some basic knowledge about rolling mills can help you choose equipment better.
